Cameroon Declared World’s Most Neglected Displacement Crisis Amid Escalating Humanitarian Needs Across Africa

A new report by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has identified Cameroon as the world’s most neglected displacement crisis, highlighting a broader trend of underfunded and under-reported humanitarian emergencies across the African continent.

The report points to a protracted civil war in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions, ongoing since 2017, as the primary driver of displacement and humanitarian suffering. This designation underscores the critical need for increased international attention and funding for a crisis that has largely remained out of the global spotlight.

This announcement comes as numerous other African nations continue to grapple with severe humanitarian challenges. Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, and Burkina Faso are also featured prominently on the NRC’s list of neglected crises, with millions displaced by conflict and violence.

The report also highlights Uganda, which, despite not facing large-scale internal violence, hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa, predominantly from neighboring South Sudan, Sudan, and the DRC, placing immense strain on its resources.

These findings serve as a stark reminder of the widespread and often overlooked humanitarian needs across Africa, urging donors and the international community to re-engage and provide critical support to avert further suffering.
