Ethiopia Aims for Global Coffee Dominance with Record Production Forecasts

NAIROBI, Kenya – June 12, 2025 – Ethiopia, the birthplace of Arabica coffee, is poised for a significant surge in its global standing within the coffee market.

The nation is projected to achieve a record production of 11.6 million 60-kilogram bags in the 2025/26 market year, according to the latest estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

This optimistic forecast positions Ethiopia to become the world’s second-largest coffee exporter by 2033, a key goal outlined in its long-term development strategy.

The anticipated bumper harvest is attributed to a combination of favorable weather conditions, ongoing government campaigns to rejuvenate aging coffee trees, and expanded access to improved seedlings and agricultural inputs for farmers.

The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s annual report on Ethiopia’s coffee sector, highlighted by Daily Coffee News, projects coffee exports to reach 7.8 million bags, an 11.4% increase from the previous year.

Policy reforms allowing more producers to export directly are also playing a crucial role in boosting the country’s presence in international markets, demonstrating Ethiopia’s strategic efforts to leverage its prized commodity on the world stage.
