Gaza Crisis: Deadly Aid Site Attack Amidst Faltering Ceasefire Hopes
Gaza City, Gaza Strip – The humanitarian crisis in Gaza intensified today after Israeli forces reportedly opened fire near a US-backed aid distribution site in Rafah, killing at least 31 people and injuring scores more. This tragic incident comes as ceasefire negotiations face significant hurdles, with Hamas reportedly seeking last-minute changes to a US-backed 60-day truce proposal, which a US envoy has dismissed as “unacceptable.” The UN warns that Gaza remains the “hungriest place on Earth,” with its entire population at risk of famine, as aid missions continue to face severe obstructions

The attack comes as fragile ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain stalled. Hamas has reportedly sought amendments to a U.S.-backed 60-day truce proposal, which a U.S. envoy has dismissed as “totally unacceptable.” Hamas’s proposed changes reportedly focus on guarantees for a permanent ceasefire, the timing of hostage releases, aid delivery mechanisms, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces – conditions that Israel has consistently rejected.
The United Nations has repeatedly warned that Gaza is the “hungriest place on Earth,” with its entire 2.3 million population at risk of famine. Aid organizations, including UNRWA, have condemned the current aid distribution system, which they say is chaotic, insufficient, and puts civilians at immense risk. They argue that a new U.S.- and Israeli-backed foundation, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which is now largely overseeing aid distribution, lacks neutrality and is being used to control the population. The GHF, however, has denied reports of fatalities at its sites, calling them “false and fabricated.”
The latest fatalities add to an already staggering death toll, with Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting over 54,000 Palestinians killed and 124,000 wounded since the conflict began. Aid workers themselves continue to face extreme dangers, with at least 28 killed in May alone, and a total of 452 since October 2023. The UN’s relief operations remain severely obstructed, with very little aid reaching warehouses and even less being distributed safely to those in desperate need. Source; Aljazeera
