UN Denies Rumors Of Relocating Key Agencies To Nairobi

UN dispels rumors of relocating key agencies to Nairobi

NEW YORK — The United Nations has denied circulating rumors that it has decided to relocate several of its key agencies to Nairobi, Kenya, by 2026.

In response to a question about the alleged plan to move the headquarters of three UN agencies, including UNICEF, UN Women, and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), from New York to Nairobi, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that the matter is “not a confirmed thing.”

Haq added that the UN is, however, looking at various options to make its operations more cost-effective. He mentioned that there is a plan to shift much of the UN’s work to areas with lower costs, but emphasized that the discussions are still in their preliminary stages.

The rumors that the UN had decided to move the headquarters of UNICEF, UN Women, and UNFPA to Nairobi have been circulating recently on social media and in some news outlets.

While acknowledging that such plans are being considered, Haq clarified that no final decision has been made as the rumors suggested. Nairobi is currently a major UN hub, serving as the fourth largest UN headquarters city after New York, Geneva, and Vienna.
