ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia entered a landmark political chapter today, October 5, 2026, officially inaugurating its new “Medemer” government following the country’s 7th general election.

During its grand opening session in Addis Ababa, the newly elected House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) elected Ahmed Shide formerly serving as the nation’s long-standing Minister of Finance as the new Speaker of the House. 

Immediately following his election, newly appointed Speaker Ahmed Shide announced that Abiy Ahmed has been officially re-elected and sworn in by parliament to serve a new five-year term as Prime Minister of Ethiopia, backed by the Prosperity Party’s decisive legislative majority.

In parallel, W/ro Muferihat Kamil was designated to lead the House of Federation.

Following the ruling party’s victory in the June 1 general election, Dr. Abiy Ahmed officially took his oath of office before lawmakers for another five-year mandate.

The session transitioned former Finance Minister Ahmed Shide to head the federal legislative branch as Speaker, where he formally oversaw the executive appointment.
