ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was officially sworn in for a second five-year term as Prime Minister of Ethiopia during the inaugural session of the 7th parliamentary term of the House of Peoples’ Representatives in Addis Ababa.
The formal ceremony, which marked the opening of the 7th parliamentary session and the official formation of Ethiopia’s new “Medemer Government,” commenced with newly elected lawmakers taking their oath of office. President Taye Atske-Selassie formally opened the constituent session, congratulating members elected in the 7th General Election as they assumed their constitutional mandates.

Following the oath-taking, the House re-elected Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister, extending his leadership following the governing Prosperity Party’s parliamentary majority victory. Former Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide was elected Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, while former State Minister of Education Ayelech Eshete was elected Deputy Speaker.

In his inaugural address to lawmakers, Prime Minister Abiy outlined the strategic priorities of his incoming administration, vowing to pursue peaceful access to the Red Sea, execute complete macroeconomic reforms, and strengthen national defense capabilities. Abiy also noted that the new governing cycle would prioritize anti-corruption drives and explore targeted constitutional reforms.
Attention now turns to the official announcement and composition of Abiy’s new cabinet, as the government establishes key economic, defense, and regional administration portfolios amid ongoing national and regional security dynamics.
