ADDIS ABABA / TEL AVIV – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has held high-level discussions with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos, centering on Ethiopia’s internal political landscape, national cohesion, and broader security dynamics across the Horn of Africa.
The diplomatic engagement comes precisely two days after a high-profile joint statement on Red Sea security was issued by a four-nation bloc comprising Egypt, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia. The timing of Tel Aviv’s public backing underscores accelerating geopolitical realignments along the Bab-el-Mandeb strait and the wider Red Sea maritime corridor.

In an official statement released following the talks, Minister Sa’ar characterized the dialogue as highly successful, explicitly emphasizing the vital importance of Ethiopia’s unity, sovereignty, and internal stability. Both ministers underscored a shared interest in ensuring regional peace and counterbalancing emerging security threats across East Africa.
Reaffirming the historic bilateral relationship between Israel and Ethiopia, Sa’ar stated that Israel places immense value on its long-standing partnership with Addis Ababa and committed to further expanding bilateral cooperation across strategic, economic, and diplomatic spheres.
The timing of the Israeli-Ethiopian dialogue is politically significant. The recent coordination between Cairo, Asmara, Port Sudan (SAF), and Mogadishu has created a formidable coalition surrounding Ethiopia.
From Cairo’s perspective, securing influence along the Red Sea and Somalia serves as leverage regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and regional maritime routes.
Israel’s prompt public solidarity with Ethiopia signals to the four-nation bloc that Addis Ababa is not diplomatically isolated and retains strong strategic partnerships with major non-Horn powers.
For Israel, stability in the Horn of Africa directly impacts its maritime security in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, particularly given ongoing trade disruptions and security risks in the Bab-el-Mandeb strait.
A stable, united Ethiopia serves as a crucial anchor against regional fragmentation and hostile maritime influences. By framing Ethiopia’s stability as a priority for broader Horn of Africa peace, Tel Aviv aligns its national security interest with Addis Ababa’s territorial integrity.
The conversation between Gedion Timotheos and Gideon Sa’ar reflects a continuation of long-standing intelligence, diplomatic, and security ties between Israel and Ethiopia. As Ethiopia navigates complex domestic security challenges alongside regional tensions along its borders, support from Tel Aviv reinforces Addis Ababa’s diplomatic leverage in international forums and strategic defense posture across East Africa.
