Escalating Warfare Across Middle East and Horn of Africa Leaves Millions Trapped Without Emergency Relief

SANA’A / ADDIS ABABA – Accelerating military offensives and security breakdowns across both the Middle East and the Horn of Africa are driving severe humanitarian emergencies, creating mass internal displacement and leaving millions of civilians without access to basic emergency aid.

In Yemen, Saudi-backed government forces announced major counter-offensives on Tuesday aimed at recapturing strategic positions from Houthi forces, who maintain control over Sana’a and wide swathes of the country. The sudden surge in military operations and rapid shifts in territorial control have worsened Yemen’s prolonged economic and structural breakdown.

Thousands of civilians have been forced to flee their homes, compounding displacement figures across heavily impacted governorates. With active combat cutting off primary supply lines, international humanitarian agencies report severe restrictions on delivering food, clean water, and life-saving medical supplies to increasingly isolated populations.

Simultaneously, a flare-up of hostilities across northern Ethiopia spanning the Tigray, Afar, and Amhara regions has escalated into a severe humanitarian disaster. Renewed active fighting and structural security failures have triggered widespread displacement, destruction of critical civilian infrastructure, and a sharp deterioration in living conditions.

Communities previously devastated by successive cycles of war, particularly agrarian families, women, and children, are facing critical food shortages and collapsing healthcare services. Aid organizations face acute access challenges, unable to reach vulnerable displaced populations due to active combat zones and security risks along key supply corridors.

While the conflicts in Yemen and northern Ethiopia stem from distinct geopolitical drivers, their simultaneous escalation underscores the broader regional fragility spanning the Red Sea corridor. In both arenas, prolonged kinetic engagements continue to exact a severe toll on civilian populations, overwhelming local coping mechanisms and straining international response capabilities.
