R SPLMF Demands Systemic Reform Denounces SPLM IG Misrule On Martyrs Day 2026
JUBA – The Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Forward (R-SPLM/F) has issued a stinging rebuke of South Sudan’s ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Government (SPLM-IG), accusing the administration of betraying the foundational sacrifices of the country’s independence struggle.
In an official statement sent directly to Ethio Insight on July 30, 2026, marking South Sudan’s annual Martyrs’ Day, R-SPLM/F Chairman Nathaniel Garang Aduotdit declared that the sacrifices of fallen freedom fighters, political leaders, and civilians have been abandoned in favor of corruption, state-sponsored violence, and institutional decay.
“The noble aspirations for which our martyrs paid the ultimate price have been abandoned,” Garang stated in the release, warning that the nation now stands on the “verge of collapse and disintegration”.
He pointed out stark socioeconomic contradictions within the country, highlighting how citizens queue for basic food aid in a nation rich in fertile land and water resources, while educated youth remain unable to secure meaningful employment.
The opposition group emphasized that the country’s current plight stems not from foreign intervention, but from governance failures at home. Garang paid tribute to the diverse cross-section of South Sudanese who lost their lives across decades of struggle including frontline combatants, assassinated political figures, tortured prisoners of war, student activists, and civilians who perished under military bombardment and deliberate starvation.
To address the deepening crisis, the R-SPLM/F called for a second liberation focused on institutional transformation rather than territorial control. The group outlined a platform demanding a comprehensive and inclusive national political process aimed at rescuing state structures from fragmentation. Key priorities highlighted in the movement’s agenda include:
- Electoral & Institutional Reform: Conducting free, fair, and transparent elections alongside establishing public institutions that serve citizens rather than ruling elites.
- Anti-Corruption & Accountability: Enforcing zero tolerance for corruption and ensuring complete transparency in the management of public funds and natural resources.
- Social Cohesion & National Healing: Eliminating inter-communal tribalism and halting the politicization and weaponization of local communities against one another.
- Economic Sovereignty: Rebuilding domestic agricultural capabilities to achieve food security while reconnecting South Sudan to international investment and diaspora expertise.
Reaching out directly to the nation’s youth across all 64 counties, Garang urged citizens to register, organize, and participate actively in shaping political reform, asserting that the younger generation must actively prevent the country from descending into total ruin.
The statement highlights growing domestic political friction and mounting calls for political restructuring as South Sudan struggles with economic stagnation, persistent inter-communal violence, and delayed democratic transitions.
