African Union Warns Houthi Escalation Imperils Energy Supplies And Regional Stability
ADDIS ABABA – The African Union Commission has issued a strong condemnation following fresh attacks claimed by Yemen’s Houthi movement against commercial oil tankers operating in the Red Sea, warning that the escalating naval confrontation poses a direct threat to international maritime security, regional peace, and the core economic interests of African nations.
The statement, released by AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, comes in response to the Houthis’ declaration of a naval blockade targeting vessels calling at Saudi ports. According to military claims by the Houthi movement, two Saudi oil tankers were targeted in the Red Sea after allegedly breaching newly declared maritime restrictions.
Describing the strikes as a “dangerous escalation,” Youssouf warned that disrupting commercial navigation in one of the world’s most critical sea lanes carries far-reaching consequences for global supply chains and African economic resilience.
In an explicit show of continental backing, the AU Commission chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, expressing unwavering support for Riyadh’s security, sovereignty, and stability.
The AU stressed that freedom of navigation and the safety of commercial shipping are non-negotiable principles under international law. Any deliberate attempt to block or target commercial shipping, Youssouf noted, risks escalating regional tensions into a broader crisis that impacts both sides of the Red Sea.
While the Red Sea conflict is frequently viewed through the lens of Middle Eastern geopolitics, the African Union highlighted its direct economic impact on the African continent:
- Supply Chain Disruptions: The Red Sea and Suez Canal maritime corridor serves as a vital trade artery linking Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Disruption to shipping increases freight costs, delays essential imports, and adds severe inflationary pressure on African domestic markets.
- Energy Security: With oil tankers directly targeted in the waterway, potential spikes in transit risk premiums and energy prices threaten fuel stability for African economies reliant on petroleum imports.
- Horn of Africa Vulnerability: For countries along the Horn of Africa, safe and open sea routes are paramount for commercial connectivity, food imports, and port infrastructure revenues.
The African Union Commission called on the Houthi movement to immediately halt all attacks against commercial shipping, refrain from further unilateral blockades, and strictly adhere to international law governing maritime transit.
Youssouf reiterated the AU’s backing for broader regional and international diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions, preserving maritime security, and securing a peaceful resolution to the surrounding regional crises.
