Ethiopian American Delegation Meets Rep. Sara Jacobs On Regional Crisis
San Diego, CA – Today, Ethiopian American diaspora leaders were honored to be welcomed by Congresswoman Sara Jacobs to her office for a productive discussion on important community concerns and the evolving political and humanitarian situation in Ethiopia.
The delegation and broader diaspora engagement are being led by Abdi Mohamoud, widely known also as Mohamed Sheik Ahmed, a longtime community and human rights advocate with decades of experience engaging U.S. policymakers on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.
Since approximately 2000, Mr. Mohamoud and his organization have maintained longstanding relationships and engagement with officials at the U.S. Department of State and members of Congress from both Democratic and Republican parties. He has also engaged organizations including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International to raise awareness about human rights, governance, and humanitarian concerns in Ethiopia’s Somali Region.
During the meeting, the delegation discussed Ethiopia’s political and humanitarian challenges, including concerns about the deteriorating governance situation in the Somali Region and the potential for renewed conflict involving the Ethiopian federal government, the TPLF, Fano forces, and other actors.
The delegation emphasized peaceful dialogue, inclusive governance, protection of civilians, human rights, and sustained U.S. diplomatic engagement to help prevent further instability.
We greatly appreciate Congresswoman Jacobs’ leadership, engagement, and willingness to listen to the concerns of the Ethiopian American diaspora. Her role on the House Foreign Affairs Committee provides an important platform for addressing political, humanitarian, security, and development issues affecting Ethiopia and Africa.
Following the November 2026 elections, Congresswoman Jacobs is expected to welcome Ethiopian American diaspora community leaders to her Washington, D.C., office for a broader discussion on Ethiopia and constructive pathways toward peace, stability, accountable governance, and a better future.
Under Mr. Mohamoud’s leadership, Ethiopian American diaspora leaders are also planning important engagements in Washington, D.C., in the coming weeks with members of Congress, U.S. government officials, human rights organizations, policy experts, and other stakeholders.
These engagements will focus on advancing peaceful solutions, strengthening constructive U.S. involvement, elevating community concerns, and building greater understanding of the challenges facing Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian American diaspora remains committed to dialogue, peace, stability, human rights, and a future in which all communities have a meaningful voice in Ethiopia’s development.
