Ethiopian Media Authority Revokes Addis Standards License Over National Interest Claims
NAIROBI – In a move that has sparked widespread concern over the shrinking space for independent journalism in East Africa, the Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) has officially revoked the registration and license of Addis Standard, one of the country’s most prominent independent media outlets.
The decision, which took effect on February 24, 2026, was justified by the Authority on claims that the outlet repeatedly published reports that “violate media ethics” and “endanger national interests.” The EMA stated that despite prior warnings, the outlet failed to “correct its path.”

This latest crackdown comes amidst a turbulent period for Ethiopian journalists. Addis Standard has long been a critical voice, providing in-depth analysis of regional conflicts, human rights, and political developments. Its closure marks a significant blow to the “marketplace of ideas” in a country already struggling with transparency.
International press freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), have been closely monitoring the rising pressure on Ethiopian journalists both at home and in the diaspora.
The closure of Addis Standard is expected to draw further international scrutiny toward Ethiopia’s commitment to its own media laws and constitutional guarantees of free speech.
Ethio Insight stands in solidarity with all journalists facing persecution and calls on the Ethiopian authorities to prioritize the protection of media institutions over their suppression.
