Police Brutality Claims Spark Kenya Protests

Nationwide Protests Erupt in Kenya Over Blogger’s Death in Police Custody

NAIROBI, Kenya – June 12, 2025 – Kenya is facing a wave of intense protests, particularly in its capital Nairobi, following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody. The incident, which occurred on June 8th, has ignited widespread anger and calls for accountability, with demonstrators today clashing with law enforcement in the city’s central business district, as reported by the Associated Press.

The official narrative initially put forth by police, suggesting Ojwang died after “hitting his head against the cell wall,” has been vehemently challenged. Autopsy results have since emerged, contradicting police claims and indicating that Ojwang suffered multiple injuries consistent with assault. This revelation has further fueled public outrage and intensified demands for justice.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a full investigation into the matter, with several officers reportedly being questioned. The IPOA has also noted that CCTV systems at the Central Police Station, where Ojwang was held, were interfered with just before his arrival, as reported by the BBC.

President William Ruto has condemned the death, calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable” and ordering a “swift, transparent, and credible” investigation, according to CTV News. However, public and political pressure continues to mount, with many demanding not just accountability for the officers directly involved, but also for higher-ranking officials. These ongoing demonstrations highlight a deep-seated frustration among Kenyans concerning issues of police brutality and a perceived culture of impunity.
