ADDIS ABABA – The forced displacement of civilians from Sudan’s eastern Gedaref state constitutes a severe violation of international law, according to a high-ranking official from the TASIS-led Sudan Peace Government.

Khalid Dana’a, a minister within the peace government, stated that the ongoing expulsions of local residents from their homes amount to “a crime against humanity and a fully fledged war crime”.

The minister emphasized that the forced removals in the agricultural state are not isolated events. Instead, the political leadership characterizes the actions as part of a much broader, organized campaign of violence directed at non-combatants.

According to Dana’a, the systemic abuses are being carried out directly by military forces loyal to General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan.

Gedaref state, located near the Ethiopian border, has long served as a critical agricultural hub and a major sanctuary for hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing combat in Khartoum and Al Jazirah. The introduction of forced displacements into this region threatens to further destabilize an already overstretched humanitarian infrastructure.

Humanitarian groups note that eastern Sudan has carried an immense burden since the outbreak of the civil war. The forced expulsion of residents by state forces marks a dangerous shift in how civilians are treated in supposedly secure zones.

The explicit use of the term “crimes against humanity” by a government minister elevates the legal scrutiny facing the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) leadership. International legal frameworks strictly prohibit the arbitrary displacement of civilian populations during internal armed conflicts unless required for their immediate security or imperative military reasons.

As the conflict continues without a clear diplomatic resolution, these formal accusations from within Sudanese political structures add pressure on international monitoring bodies to document command-responsibility violations
