Yacob Yatane A Prominent Ethiopian Journalist University Lecturer And Human Rights Defender Living In Exile

(NAIROBI) – Yacob Yatane, a prominent Ethiopian journalist, university lecturer, and human rights defender living in exile, has been found dead in his residence in Nairobi. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the community of exiled media professionals and raised urgent questions regarding the safety of dissidents in Kenya.

Prior to his death, Yacob had repeatedly confided in close colleagues and friends about a series of targeted threats. According to sources close to the deceased, Yacob reported being consistently trailed by unidentified Amharic-speaking individuals in Nairobi.

In November 2025 (late 2017 EC), the situation escalated when two men and a woman reportedly tracked him to his residence, where they physically confronted and threatened him. Fearing for his life, Yacob reported these incidents to the Kenyan National Police Service and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Despite being forced to change his residence for security reasons, he remained vulnerable until his death.

While initial reports from the scene suggested a non-violent death, a preliminary post-mortem report obtained by WT Media reveals a more complex and suspicious medical profile.

The report, issued at the Nairobi City Mortuary, identifies the cause of death as Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). Medical experts note that DIC is a serious condition where blood clots form throughout the body’s small blood vessels, often triggered by severe infections or, significantly, exposure to toxins or poisoning.

Crucially, the autopsy also discovered a parietal scalp contusion (internal head trauma) and bilateral lung hemorrhage (bleeding in both lungs). These findings contradict the narrative of a peaceful passing and suggest the possibility of physical trauma or a lethal physiological reaction to an external substance. Samples have been taken for a full toxicology screening to confirm the presence of toxins.

Yacob Yatane was a highly respected intellectual from the Konso community. His professional career was marked by significant contributions to Ethiopian media and academia:

  • Media: He served as a senior English program editor and reporter for the state broadcaster, ETV.
  • Academia: He was a dedicated university lecturer and researcher.
  • Activism: In exile, he remained a vocal critic of human rights abuses, managing the “Southern Ethio Forum” and contributing analytical articles to platforms like Addis Standard as recently as last week.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and other international human rights organizations are closely monitoring the case. Yacob’s brother, Muse Yatane, a university lecturer who is travelling from Ethiopia to Nairobi to oversee the investigation, is seeking a transparent and exhaustive inquiry.

The death of Yacob Yatane underscores the precarious existence of Ethiopian journalists in Nairobi, a city once considered a safe haven but increasingly seen as a landscape of surveillance and cross-border repression. News Source – WT Media
