Ethiopian Media Authority Imposes Indefinite Suspension on Tigray TV
ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Media Authority has issued an official press statement announcing the indefinite suspension of Tigray TV, taking immediate regulatory action against the regional broadcaster following comprehensive content monitoring evaluations.
The regulatory body noted that following the Pretoria Peace Agreement signed between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, previous operational suspensions on Tigray TV were lifted through consultative agreements with the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray. The authority stated that it had subsequently engaged in technical support initiatives, providing professional training programs on peacebuilding and journalism ethics to Tigray TV personnel aimed at aligning the station’s operations with constitutional and professional standards.
According to the statement, recent broadcast monitoring conducted by the Ethiopian Media Authority revealed that Tigray TV has been repeatedly transmitting content that threatens national security, public safety, and national interests, while promoting extremism and inciting conflict. Based on its statutory powers, the authority confirmed that the station’s broadcasting authorization is suspended indefinitely starting today.
The regulator also issued a strict directive prohibiting all digital, broadcast, and print media outlets from using Tigray TV as a news source or rebroadcasting any content unlawfully generated by the station. The Ethiopian Media Authority warned that any media enterprise violating this directive will face immediate administrative and legal sanctions under Ethiopian law.
