Seven Ethiopian Rebel Factions and Opposition Groups Form Coalition Aimed at Establishing Transitional Government
ADDIS ABABA – A coalition comprising seven armed insurgent forces and political organizations has officially announced the formation of a unified alliance aimed at establishing an inclusive transitional government in Ethiopia.
Broadcast today through regional media outlets operating in Tigray, the official statement confirmed the establishment of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, short-named Alliance for Survival. Founding members of the new front include the Amhara Fano National Movement, the Oromo Liberation Army, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
The announcement was delivered via video statement by Zemene Kasse, Chairman of the Amhara-based insurgent group Amhara Fano National Movement, who was introduced as the chairperson of the newly formed umbrella organization. Additional founding organizations named in the joint declaration include the Ogaden National Liberation Front, the Afar National Revolutionary Democratic Front, the Benishangul People’s Liberation Movement, and the Gumuz People’s Democratic Movement.
Zemene stated that the primary objective of the alliance, established following extensive negotiations and operational hurdles, is to oversee the formation of an inclusive transitional government guided by a binding transitional charter. Describing the initiative as a new transitional chapter, he stated the process aims to guarantee the fundamental human and democratic rights of all Ethiopians without compromise.
The coalition’s leader clarified that initiating this transitional phase requires the removal of the current administration led by the ruling Prosperity Party. According to the joint statement, the alliance’s agenda focuses on two core priorities: safeguarding national survival and state security, and facilitating an inclusive constitutional dialogue.
Under its first priority, the coalition outlined immediate measures including halting ongoing internal conflicts across the country, securing peace and order, stabilizing the social and economic environment, rebuilding diplomatic relations with neighboring states, and restoring Ethiopia’s regional and international standing. Under its second priority, the group pledged to conduct an authentic and all-inclusive constitutional dialogue designed to address key public and national questions through direct popular participation.
